Why Phoksundo Lake Is Nepal's Best-Kept Trekking Secret

Dolpo sits in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges, which means a different landscape entirely from the rest of Nepal's trekking routes — high desert plateaus, Tibetan-influenced villages, and a lake so clear it barely looks real.

The restricted-area permit and the length of the trek (we run it at 18 days) keep numbers low. On a good week you'll see more yaks than other trekking groups.

It's not an easy trek — the Kang La Pass sits above 5,000m and the route is remote enough that we carry full camping and kitchen support rather than relying on teahouses. But for trekkers who've done EBC or Annapurna and want something further off the map, it's the one we recommend first.

Shey Gompa, a few days beyond the lake, is worth the extra days on its own — one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in the region, still active, still remote.
